Article by Preston Walker

People can find that they frequently have to deal with extreme stress. There are also many situations that can happen that will create high stress levels and anxiety. A disaster is just one example of a situation that can produce unusual amounts of stress. Two common reactions that are seen in that kind of event are strong denial and symptoms of shock. In the immediate aftermath one may be more dominate than the other. It is important to recognize that these are natural responses meant to offer protection to the individual. It is as equally important to express your emotions in a healthy way as it is to talk about your feelings or experience in a comfortable environment. When everything is kept inside there is a probability that the coping mechanisms will fail. Awareness can be a tool that you can use to your advantage in the event you undergo an extremely stressful situation. People who do not take the time and consider the possible reactions and consequences will be at the greatest risk for poorly coping with what has happened. With self-education or by simply obtaining the advice of a professional, you do have the ability to help yourself. If you are convinced that you have too much stress, you must do something to bring it back down.
