Let’s take one example which is when a disaster occurs, and it is these types of situations that can produce unusual amounts of stress Some of the more common reactions to those events are strong denial and symptoms of shock. One or the other may arise more quickly immediately after the event. We need to recognize that both of these reactions are natural responses designed to help protect the individual. Case in point, an extreme stress situation could create overwhelming feelings of fear. Unfortunately we may see that it takes a long time for that person to overcome that fear or they may never be able to completely get over it. The reactions that are caused by extreme stress are a difficult issue. We feel that in any situation, the best action is to obtain qualified professional counseling. Be prepared for an immediate reaction in some form if your child has suffered a traumatic and extremely stressful event. When everything is kept inside there is a probability that the coping mechanisms will fail. Because of the nature of traumatic events that can cause extreme stress, it will no doubt be suggested that professional treatment is the best advice.
